Peptides are something of a skin care powerhouse, but many people don’t yet know exactly what peptides are or how they benefit human skin. Certain peptides are being utilized by modern skin care developers to combat the

signs of aging:

  • Sagging

  • Wrinkles

  • Thinness

  • Dullness

  • Fine lines

In this article, we’ll explain the role that peptides play in fighting against the often-unwanted indications of aging skin.

First, what are Peptides?

Peptides, like proteins, are composed of amino acids. There is a stark difference between proteins and peptides: the length of the amino acid chain. Chains of fifty amino acids or less are peptides. Larger amino acid chains are known as proteins.

When applied to the skin, peptides are easily absorbed into the top layer. From there, these peptides send signals to other functions within the skin – such as collagen, which is responsible for fullness and firmness.

Which Peptides are Popular in Skin Care?

There is a wide assortment of peptides on the market, with a significant number of them being utilized in skin care technology. However, there are three types of peptides that are most commonly applied to this field of purpose: collagen-stimulating peptides, copper peptides, and neuropeptides.

Collagen-stimulating peptides like Matrixyl are found in high-end skin care products. The enhancement of natural collagen production allows for more youthful, radiant skin.

Copper peptides target inflammation and provide a smoother, firmer surface to the skin.

The most innovative and most recently-recognized skin care peptides are neuropeptides. These peptides act upon facial muscles, relaxing them. The effect witnessed is similar to BOTOX injections, without the discomfort and rigid maintenance. Syn-ake is a synthetic peptide that is making its way into the mainstream due to its wrinkle-smoothing properties. Another popular skin care peptide is Argireline, whose claim to fame is facial muscle relaxation that greatly diminishes the appearance of wrinkles without fillers.

How Do You Use Peptides to Care for Skin?

Serums and creams are the way to go when using peptides to improve the health and appearance of skin. No skin care product works overnight to banish wrinkles and smooth the skin’s surface, but over time and with routine application, the differences between “before” and “after” becomes starkly visible.

The same is true of when you choose to stop using peptides in your skin care. After some time with using them, ceasing their use will eventually cause a different look – essentially revealing the same problems that you had used peptides to treat in the first place.

Peptides have been a powerful breakthrough in skin care technology, with new advancements made all the time toward perfecting their use in skin care creams or serums. If you want to lessen the signs of aging as they appear on your face, it’s worth some serious consideration.
